What makes The Night Of The Purple Moon so interesting is Sun Ra's use of the Rocksichord, an instrument mainly built for the rock bands of the time but which has also been used by other, more experimental artists such as Terry Riley and even composer George Crumb! The tunes on the album are all quite playful, upbeat and often trippy at the same time. Considering there are no insane monster jams to be found, I have to agree this is one of the most accessible Sun Ra records I've heard. It should please both jazz and rock fans equally and is a great place to start if you are new to the artist. The music on the CD comes directly from an unused copy of the original LP on Saturn since the master tapes have been destroyed. The sound quality isn't great, but is still very much worth investigating (the internationally acclaimed Impulse! label were supposed to release it at one point, but this project unfortunately never materialized). |
