After purchasing and falling in love with the Sunspots reissues of Anthony Braxton and Alan Silva's albums for BYG/Actuel, I decided to get rid of my old double CD edition of Sun Ra's The Solar-Myth Approach and ordered the two volumes separately. I was afraid for the audio quality, but I'm glad to report that it sounds as horrible on both editions. The music however, regardless of the lo-fidelity, shines through like a diamond in the rough. The incredible rumbling of Spectrum still sounds as incredible and alien, the weird, disturbing and ultimately catchy vibe of The Satellites Are Spinning is still as effective and Seen III, Took 4 will definitely still have you scratching your head. This album and Volume 2 rank way up there as my favorite Sun Ra releases to date. If you, like me, enjoy the saturnian's music when it is at it's most surprising, experimental and yes, even indescribable, then do yourselves a favor and hunt these down. You'll thank me later.
