The second volume for Sun Ra's The Solar-Myth Approach is just as amazing as it's predecessor. There are some true gems to be heard here: the musique contrète-like Interpretations (this one will have you frowning), the aggressive madness of The Utter Nots or event he mysterious vibe of Ancient Ethiopia. Something I have noticed and which I find interesting about these two volumes is that both seem to have corresponding "sister" tracks. For example Outer Spaceways, Inc. is very similar to Volume One's The Satellites Are Spinning and Scene 1, Take 1 is obviously related to Seen III, Took 4. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some deeper meaning to these associations, but I'll leave that to the experts. I find these Sunspots reissues to be stunning, the mini-LP replicas are absolutely beautiful and although the audio quality isn't all that great, I find that the lo-fidelity of the recording adds a certain warmth to these, at times, austere alien sounds. |
