This is easily the "jazziest" Sun Ra album in my collection. I've always been more interested in this artist's more experimental albums and his reputation for pushing the boundaries of the genre; there's simply no one freer than the Ra. So what to think about material that is so heavily anchored in traditional jazz? Well, for one, this album has an incredible historical value, the last six songs on the CD are the earliest known recordings by Sun Ra, complete with lo-fi sound quality. These songs alone warrant purchasing the CD. Sun Ra plays a very early model electric piano on many of these tracks and it sounds spectacular! This is the legend himself during his formative years and the seeds of the madness that was to follow are in their pupae stage. Although this album strikes me as slightly less interesting musically, one cannot get a good impression of Sun Ra's work with only one album, Sound Sun Pleasure!! is but one piece of a much larger puzzle.
