Probably Sun Ra's most famous record, Space Is The Place is definitely one of the more accessible recordings which still retains some of his more experimental tendencies. The twenty-one minute title track for example, might start off as a funky number with almost spiritual chanting, but once the other elements join in: new arrhythmical vocals, shrieking saxophone and brass, percussion; the song sideswipes and becomes completely warped. There is a very fun cover version (parody?) of this song on The Residents' album Residue Deux which is worth checking out. Besides Sea Of Sounds, with it's loud, machine-gun synth notes and Rocket Number Nine's mantra-like chanting which are likely to drive you nuts, the other songs are slightly more traditional (while remaining in free-jazz territory). A classic yet again by the man!
