Beautiful, very early performance by The Taj-Mahal Travellers. Slow harmonium drones (similar to Hermann Nitsch's works for the instrument), unidentified buzzes and sinewaves. Brass instruments swell up, sounding like sick dogs, voices and xylophone join in. Kosugi then brings out his electronic violin for the last of the three tracks on this album. Things get louder and stranger, but it never gets annoying. There is something quite magical about these drones. The Taj-Mahal Travellers could not have concocted a more "out-there" album then what you hear here. Imagine La Monte Young had he added a bunch of reverb and delay to his sound, but then again this japanese group are more out there to create atmospheres with their automatic music then to ponder about the theory of sound. Their influence on groups like Double Leopards and The Skaters sounds pretty obvious to me. |
