Tarentel
I never thought I'd ever own a Tarentel album. Not that they weren't any good, just that the name, in my head, has always been associated with the whole post-rock which was spreading like wildfire everywhere around the world when bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Tortoise and Labradford were the talk of the town. To me, Tarentel were just one of the many bads to jump on the bandwagon. I liked what I heard, but felt it lacked originality. Flash forward ten or so years, I haven't followed the bands career at all and out comes THIS album: Ghetto Beats On The Surface Of The Sun. Something's happened, this isn't the Tarentel I knew... this was... simply... FUUUUUCK! WOW!!! Nothing like I've ever heard before; buzzing, alien sounds, tribal drums, elctricity, noisy explosions and meditative passages. No pretentious crescendoes or complex rhythm patterns, just pure, extremely potent weirdness! I don't know what caused the band to change their sound this much, but I'll definitely be looking back into their back catalogue to see how this has all progressed throughout the years. I can guarantee I'll be reporting about earlier records very soon!
