Third Ear Band
Here's another band I discovered through emusic.com's fifty free mp3 program a few years back. I had heard the name previously on a site that compared them to The Taj-Mahal Travellers, so I just had to hear. Indeed, the group's music is based in drone and acoustic instruments including the recorder, violin, cello, oboe, etc. and it's psychedelic as hell, but in a dark and gloomy way. It's no wonder Roman Polanski asked them to score his infamously somber film version of MacBeth. The group is relatively obscure even today, even though their discography is quite extensive. I find it surprising however that there isn't some sort of Third Ear Band revival considering the "success" of the DIY psych-folk scene thriving in the USA and Europe. Perhaps it's not too late?
