Trans Am
Trans Am is what you get when you cross Led Zeppelin with Q*Bert. Of course their sound has changed drastically throughout the years, some albums were huge surprises to this fan, but what they are most remembered for is their mix of kick-ass anthem-like rock riffs, 8-bit electro sound fuckery and proggish leanings. It was an extremely refreshing sound when they first appeared on the scene in the mid-nineties, they might not sound as exhilarating today, the initial impact having somewhat faded away; but they remain one-of-a-kind and unique. Trans Am were immediately bunched into the whole post-rock scene of the time, alongside acts like Tortoise and Labradford. But besides the progrock tendencies, they don't really fit into this category.
I remember asking a colleague from work back in the days when I was working in a music store in Montreal if he could suggest a few bands I might like. We went through the sections and he first handed me a Fennesz album, but I did not enjoy it all that much (it was the first FennO'Berg collaboration - and my ears were just not ready for that then). He then handed me the first eponymous album by Trans Am which I listened to during my break and the second those first guitar riffs hit my ears I was hooked. I've been a fan ever since and bought everything they put out to this date. But, as with most of my collection back then, it disappeared when came time to move to Sweden in 2003. I promised myself to get them back some day and this started again when I found used copies of the first album and Liberation in a small record shop.
