Uton
Probably one of the most obscure artists helming from the finnish free-folk scene, Uton remains a mystery to me. Not only do I have trouble finding relevant information about this artist, but the music I hear is so "out-there" and beyond description that it is difficult to describe, like some impalpable entity. Only one word comes to mind: drone; but even this is insufficient to give an accurate picture of what is on display here. Uton is known to vary a bit from one album to the other. For one album, the "free-folk" description will seem somewhat appropriate with the chirping birds in the background or the soft unidentified sounds that envelope his work, but others will be so noisy as to make even Birchville Cat Motel pale in comparison (even though this is the only artist with who I can hear similarities). One of a kind, extremely obscure, at times endearing, at times frightful; Uton will be an artist difficult to explore, but completely worth your while.
