This first volume of finnish underground music is living proof that a spirit of freedom was roaming rampant in the country at the time. The compilation, put together by Jukka Lindfors, the scene's most knowledgeable source, includes a wide variety of artists and delves into the many different facets of underground music: from electronic explorations (Kaukana Väijyy Ystäviä) to free-jazz (Vallankumouksen Analyysi) to the all-out weird (Eleitä Kolmelle Röyhtäilijälle - this song actually made me feel sick to the stomach when I first heard it!). The CD also includes work by underground stalwarts Erkki Kurenniemi, M.A. Numminen, Airaksinen, Mallander and of course The Sperm. The liner notes are unfortunately in finnish only (did you think this little gem was not going to make it's way out of your homeland?), but that doesn't prevent foreign listeners from enjoying the madness on display here. |
