Everything about this collection is super, from the choice of artists, to the packaging and of course the music. Each artist, group or collaborative effort is given a whole LP side of recording space. Ben Chasny's Six Organs Of Admittance has the first side and includes some of the most beautiful music on the whole release. Jack Rose's side has two songs, the first is a grinding drone piece which sounds like hurdy-gurdy while the second track is an eastern-tinged ode to Fahey. The second LP includes the best (MV+EE's side-long psychedelic jam with Chris Corsano) and worst (Dredd Foole, whose contribution sounds like the bastard son of Diamanda Galas' The Litanies Of Satan and that insane vocal garble from The Thrashmen's Surfin' Bird) efforts on the album. Fursaxa's Aegean Lore is unsurprisingly fantastic, while Joshua and Kemialliset Ystävät's side has KY written all over it. |
