The Llibre Vermell Of Montserrat is a medieval manuscript found in a monastery outside of Barcelona, Spain. It contains numerous songs composed for pilgrims of the time and are folk in nature. The reason I even bought this record is because of my on-going search for songs from Walerian Borowczyk films. During the opening credits of his Immoral Tales, the song Polorum Regina ("Queen Of The Poles") is heard. I didn't know the song was from the Llibre Vermell at first (heck I thought Llibre Vermell was the composer's name at first!) so I was usually just scavenging through the medieval sections of record stores to find it. How glad I was to finally have found this album (recordings of these songs seems to be rare). Even though this is not the exact same version from the film, Hesperion XX do a fine job at communicating the beauty of the piece. Ad Mortem Festinamus was also used in the film. |
