Album Cover

Produced by Andy Warhol who also forced Nico upon the band (she sings on a few tracks, including the loungy Femme Fatale and All Tomorrow's Parties). There is some great, gloomy rock on here. No one was playing such experimental rock at the time or singing about things from the seamy underground. Almost every track is a classic, from the gentle and misleading Sunday Morning to the hair raising crescendos of Heroin or the exotic and droning influences of Venus In Furs (my favorite track on the album). The best thing is that this album still doesn't sound dated today, the music is still fresh and has the potential to shock even today's listeners (in a good way). The album closes with the noisiest track on the album. European Son is a precursor to Velvet Underground's all-time classic and barrier-breaking Sister Ray which would surface only one year later.
