Vitalic
Vitalic is the name of french electronic artist Pascal Arbez. Like fellow countrymen Air and Daft Punk, Vitalic's music brings a breath of fresh air into the techno dance scene of today by incorporating elements of electro-clash, 70's electronica, house and rock. His sound is pretty thick and rough around the edges, but this, combined with the playfulness of his output, make him one of the most infectious techno artists to come out of France in years. I dare anyone to resist the envy to get up and dance while listening to his hits.
I'm sure many of you, like me, first heard of Vitalic through the video for his song Poney Part 1. The video was entitled Birds and featured moody images of dogs jumping and moving in slow motion, (I never thought a poodle could possibly creep me out!) surrounded by lasers. This clip was simply incredible and, like all good visual art, it brought out the music without overshadowing it. After a quick search, I found out who the artist behind the song was. It first reminded me a bit of Aphex Twin at his most "acidic" (think Come To Daddy without the serial killer mood), but with repeated listens, this comparison slowly disappeared. A friend then sent me the video for the song My Friend Dario which, although very amusing, didn't impress me as much. It was however this song that convinced me that I needed to purchase Vitalic's first album OK Cowboy. I found myself looking at the video over and over and over again, first I thought it was because of the sexy girls in the clip, but I soon realized that every time I heard the song, it felt like I've just had a cup of coffee: it woke me up and gave me a boost of energy. I downloaded the mp3s from a torrent (because my Powerbook's super drive hasn't been working for the last few months) and drove downtown to purchase it before heading off to a Grouper/Yellow Swans show!
