When I first put this album on, I had to double check to make sure I hadn't wound up with some obscure Monty Python recording. Hairy Queen indeed sounds like an absurd medieval hymn with comedic overtones. The band slowly morph back into their freaky selves as Seeker progresses from a modern ceremonial chant to a quirky Alice Coltrane meets Harry Smith extravaganza, but the ancient spirit of the album never dies down as the track is suddenly augmented by a pirate choir. Even on more epic songs like The Tallest People In The World or the title track, there is a constant ritualistic energy emanating from the music as if we were hearing trance music composed by a long-thought lost tribe of indigenous folk discovered somewhere in the middle of downtown. Five Hundred Boy Piano is easily one of the weirder moments in the VTB catalog, but will definitely please fans of outsider jazz artists like Sun Ra or Pharoah Sanders. |
