Igor Wakhevitch

I have to thank the people at Pitchfork for making me discover this artist. While literally searching the net for the strangest music in the world (actually typing in "strangest music" in a Google search), I fell upon a great article by Dominique Leone describing his first experience listening to Wakhevitch's Docteur Faust. The article was sufficient to convince me that I needed to hear this. I quickly ordered the box set through Aquarius Records and two weeks later everything was dumped onto my iPod. For the whole week after that, Wakhevitch's music was the soundtrack to my life on my way to work.

After many listens, I am still not sure what to make of Igor Wakhevitch's work. Some works include elements of musique concrète mixed with psychedelic rock passages and electronics; some are more electronic and sound almost like modern industrial techno, others are more new-age or drony. Astrology, religion, mythology and the occult are often referenced to in both titles and spoken bits on albums. In fact, if you visit Mr. Wakhevitch's personal website, you will notice that these elements are still a part of his lifestyle. This is probably what Alejandro Jodorowsky and Aleister Crowley would have sounded like had they made music together. Strange, bombastic, pretentious, but never boring.
