This is the album that introduced me to The White Stripes' minimalistic, garage blues sound, and it's one hell of an album! They decided to put back a bit of the raw energy of their first album (which had disappeared ever so slightly on De Stijl). Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground was a guaranteed success. The loud/soft dynamic really works well here. Just add an addictive chorus to the rough sound and you've got the perfect recipe. Even "softer", acoustic tracks like Hotel Yorba pack enough punch to compete with even the heaviest songs on the album. Speaking of which; although a spastic track like Fell In Love With A Girl has been overplayed (MTV, college and even mainstream radio!), it remains absolutely fucking great! Just! Fucking! Great! (Hmm! Shouldn't write these reviews while drunk!). And is it just me or are Meg White's jugs humongous!!? The group's masterpiece if you ask me (the album, not Meg's jugs). |
