Benjamin Wild
Before I started collecting psych rock and krautrock, I collected techno and electronica. I bought almost anything I found on labels such as Mille Plateaux, Force Inc. and Kompakt (to name a few). I had time to build myself up a respectable collection but sold it all (almost, I only kept my absolute favorite recordings) when I moved back to Sweden back in 2003 with the thought of buying them back later on. Unsurprisingly enough, many of these labels disappeared shortly after, making most of the albums I once owned much more difficult to find again (there are some Thomas Köner albums I regret having sold to this day!). From this point on I promised myself to purchase anything from these labels whenever I found them at a decent price.
I found this Benjamin Wild album in a store in downtown Stockholm on rebate for approximately three dollars! I had heard of Benjamin Wild before, I had even downloaded the mp3s from his first album on emusic.com, but I had never listened to them. I knew Force Tracks was a sub-label to my preferred Force Inc. label and that it was dedicated to minimal dance floor work (I had previously owned Luomo's - aka Vladislav Delay - Vocal City) so I knew what I was getting. I didn't know however that I could enjoy it this much. I'm certainly no big house music fan, but there's is definitely a certain charm to this minimal brand of dance music. The beats are heavy, the melodies shy and the vocals reduced to small snippets of gibberish but retain the same effects of the full-on vocals of usual commercial house music extravagance. I might not take it out of the shelf very often, but I definitely don't plan on getting rid of it (and it's always fun to surprise a few guests who expect me to play weird noise to let them hear this).
