Windy & Carl
Back in the days when I ate up pretty much everything the Kranky Records label would put out, I had the chance to discover many wonderful bands (this was after the whole Godspeed You! Black Emperor boom). Labradford and Stars Of The Lid were particularly impressive, but to the list I would now like to add this Michigan-based duo of Wendy Weber and Carl Hultgren, aka Windy & Carl. Space-rock has never sounded this lush. Imagine the quieter moments of My Bloody valentine, Lush and all the other shoegazers diluted in dreams until all that is left is a spectral hue... that is what these two sound like. A daydream put to music, a fluffy cloud, a late summer wind brushing through your hair, those precious seconds before your mind starts to wander off with fatigue; it's all achingly beautiful, sparse and mesmerizing.
Once again, it's a crime that I haven't gotten back all the CDs I sold to move to Sweden a few years back. I truly love this band and they are high up on my list of collections I need to complete. I'll never forget buying their album Consciousness even though I was completely broke at the time. Those were dark days for me, but the album became my getaway when things were getting too bleak (and believe me, the thing was on a loop for months). Better than all the anti-depressants but together (and much safer as well), I owe it to them to bring them back into my life after such a long, unwarranted absence.
