Witthüser & Westrupp
Bernd Witthüser and Walter Westrupp are a german duo which could be considered a more openly drug-influenced Simon & Garfunkel. Their sound is definitely rooted in folk, a lot of their work sounds like it could be played at summer festivals with the kids and the family out on a picnic, but their choice of subject is definitely not for the wee ones (although if you are a liberal hippy, you probably won't care). The duo sing in german and it's quite unfortunate that I don't understand everything they sing about, even though a lot of it doesn't leave much to the imagination. There tunes are very endearing and have a strong hippy charm which will make you want to light up a spliff and put flowers in your hair as you watch the trees melt and the clouds square red blue turquoise.
Like many of the german krautrock albums I own, I found out about this duo while trying to dig deeper in the scene and find any artists linked to the famous Ohr Records or others released on Spalax Music. The friendly folk sounds were a bit hard to digest for me, it sounded almost too sugary at times, but I fell victim to their charm rapidly enough and bought every thing I could get my hands on.
