When I first popped this baby into my CD player, I thought I had mistakenly put in one of my Deathprod records. The alarm signal-like music sure sounded awfully similar, but the comparisons pretty much end right there as the rest of the album falls squarely into familiar wolfian territory. This is noise terror at it's best without ever relying on extreme harsh tones all the time. The regular use of the saxophone in juxtaposition with delayed effects and absolute black noise also reminded me of some of Painkiller's work. Of course these are just reference points as there is pretty much nothing like Wolf Eyes out there (if you disregard all the copycats). What makes Claustrophobic so special is the fact that many of these tracks are drone-based and at times even borderline on dark ambient (tracks three and six). Like the soundtrack to some twisted David Lynch flick, the music progresses slowly, mysteriously and uncomfortably. Fuck yeah! |
