Limited to only fifty copies, this japanese bootleg LP of Young's Drift Study 5 VIII 68 PM includes the original twenty-five minute excerpt on the first side and the reverse playback on the second side. This was first released as a 5" reel-to-reel tape along with S.M.S. issue number four back in 1968; a second edition surfaced twenty years later on cassette. Besides the simplistic cover (the originals included Marian Zazeela's beautiful artwork), this bootleg recording isn't too shabby. It's pressed on clear vinyl and the sound is surprisingly quite good. There is practically no empty space on the outer rim so the record begins as soon as you drop the needle! If you're unfamiliar with Young's Drift Studies, they are basically sinewaves that resonate in your listening space, you moving around is what actually causes the "pitch" to feel like it is changing. The reverse side sounds slightly more staccato. |
