Another lovely work by Young, this time using brass instruments exclusively. Eight trumpeters are divided into two teams, one plays on the right channel, the other four on the left channel. All improvise according to certain preset rules, listening to and following each other leads. When certain notes are played, harmonics are sometimes formed creating new sounds as these notes collide. They are not evident at first, but if you listen closely they will suddenly reach your ears (like those holographic 3D eye puzzles). The notes and chords slowly shift as the work progresses. Noticing these changes is even more difficult but it's there. Listening to this on different occasions is very rewarding as these slow changes reveal themselves over longer periods of time. Even if you don't hear it at first, the resulting drones are still quite fascinating and make for a great background and soothing listen. |
